SYNOPSIS
Maryam is a 38-year-old woman who heads a family of four. She decides to cut off her right hand while working in a poultry slaughterhouse because, in this way, she can get more money from insurance than losing her left hand to pay her debts. To this end, Maryam starts to practice with her left hand to do daily chores. However, on the appointed day, when she intends to amputate her right hand, the machine suddenly jams, and Maryam’s left hand is accidentally amputated instead of her right hand. Director Statement
The poverty of women as head of the family and their subsequent arduousness is one of society’s most critical issues in the modern era, which its aggravation has caused concern.
Accordingly, as a female activist in social work and women’s studies, I set out the most important mission of my artistic and social careers to address women’s severe problems, especially in patriarchal societies often overlooked.
My interest in cinema in reflecting on women’s concerns stems from the fact that I believe that cinema serves as a tool to make women aware of their rights and, at the same time, to threaten the government’s neglect for women’s empowerment. Cinema can also show the pain of different women’s groups, echo women’s voices in society and increase attention.
Therefore, making films in the field of women is one of my life priorities so that I can play my role as a woman in support of women.
